M. Verner je archeolog, egyptolog a epigraf s dlouholetou archeologickou praxí v Egyptě. Zabývá se archeologií, historií a paleografií Egypta v období 3. tis. př. Kr. Specializuje se především na archeologii doby stavitelů pyramid. Na archeologických pracích v EAR se podílí již od r. 1964. V letech 1975-2000 byl ředitelem Československého (později Českého) egyptologického ústavu UK. Je členem komise UNESCO pro památky starého Egypta a Núbie, členem řídícího výboru Mezinárodní asociace egyptologů a čestným členem Německého archeologického ústavu a Rakouského archeologického ústavu.
